Carlo Antonini acquired the historical property of Cerro del Masso in 1969 and began renovating the vineyards and the infrastructures. Throughout the years he has transformed the property from traditional Tuscan “podere mezzadrile” into a modern and functional wine estate. Since 2001 the company is owned and managed by Alberto who continues the family tradition while ensuring structural adaptation and adhering to the changing needs of the market. In recent years an additional 15 hectares of high-density vineyards have been acquired (making a total of 50 hectares), introducing therefore new varieties such as Merlot and Syrah besides the traditional Sangiovese. The core business of the company is and will remain the production of Chianti, with an innovative and consumer-friendly style Developed from the original property of Cerro of the Masso, nowadays Poggiotondo covers a total surface of approximately 70 hectares, on the Western hills of the Chianti area, in the heart of Tuscany. The soil conditions, its ideal exposure to sunlight, and the climate that benefits from the sea breeze that blows from the nearby Mediterranean coast, combined with a wise low yield practice guarantee a perfect ripening of very concentrated grapes with a unique flavor profile. In this ideal micro-climatic condition for the viticulture, Poggiotondo stands out for the efficiency and modernity of its productive structure, avoid to invest in architectonic or touristy attractions, but guaranteeing the maximum hospitality and welcoming to visitor thanks the passion and in-depth knowledge of the entire Antonini family. Graduated in 1985 in Agricultural Sciences and Enology from the University of Florence, Alberto Antonini attended a course of Wine Making at the University of Bordeaux in France and Davis in California. He began to work in 1986 as Assistant Winemaker for the Frescobaldi Group; later on he was Production manager at the Estate Col d’Orcia in Montalcino. After that he joined the Antinori’s company where he held the position of Director of the entire Enology Department until 1996. While working in Italy, he developed consulting experience at Robert Mondavi Winery, Au Bon Climat Winery and Qupè Winery. In 1997 he co-founded Matura along with his colleague Attilio Pagli. He’s currently the Group’s CEO and operates actively in the two of the 8 sectors of the company: Wine Making and International. As Senior Winemaker he holds consulting positions for producers in Argentina, Australia, California, Chile, France, Italy, Rumania, Spain, and South Africa |
